Consumers Union just published a report that Health Information Exchange Systems that are Emerging are Don’t Meet Patient Needs. As I’ve stated in previous articles, patient involvement and financial sustainability (not backed by grant money) are perhaps the two biggest factors required for a HIE to stay afloat. They say that Health care organizations need to do more to help patients realize the full benefits of electronic data from emerging health information exchange systems, according to a new study commissioned by Consumers Union that appears in the March 2012 Health Affairs. The study examines how well five major California health care organizations are meeting the needs of patients and communities in the use of their electronic data and offers important lessons for the rest of the country. How hard is it to digitize our health records? James Williams (Discovery News) answers that question with a trip to an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist, Dr. Morris Effron.
He is in the middle of converting 24 years of charts to his electronic medical record system.
The software he is using is from Greenway Medical Technologies, which I hear is a pretty good system.

Google Health is shutting down. The reason they give is that they were not able to create the impact in the market that they wanted. Google will continue to support the Direct Project protocol so if you have a Google Health account you can transfer your records to another site. I'm not so sure this transferring of data ...

Google recently announced that it will cease support of its Google Health personal health-record platform by the end of this year. This means their huge foray into healthcare and “Health 2.0” lasted less than four years.
