Okay, so this press release is somewhat confusing to me because Southeastern Michigan already has a Health Information Exchange. See http://healthinformationexchanges.org/southeast-michigan-health-information-exchange/. Now this press release comes out where they state that the The Southeast Michigan Beacon Community is starting an HIE. SEMHIE isn’t even mentioned in the press release.

The Southeast Michigan Beacon Community (SEMBC) is comprised of the cities of Detroit, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
The goal of the SEMBC is to use HIT and Exchange along with other clinical interventions to enable patient-centered care and test clinical and operational interventions that are specifically designed to deliver significant, measured results – better quality of care, lower healthcare costs, and ultimately, improved overall health of the Southeast Michigan population.

Highmark is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association based in Pittsburgh and they just announced they are working with New York-based Verizon to construct a health information exchange. Insurance companies controlling health information exchanges is a major concern of mine. What do you think they are going to do with all that patient data?????????
