Members of the Kansas Health Information Exchange (KHIE) Sustainability Committee decided on a new approach to ensure the sustainability of KHIE. The committee recommended that future operations of Kansas Health Information Exchange Inc. should be funded by fees assessed on member networks instead of on charges levied on individual medical providers.
Information exchanges across the country are facing the same issue – FUNDING. It will be interesting to follow KHIE’s progress and I hope this proves to be a viable business model. There are very few HIEs that are breaking even and financially viable.

The Kansas City-area health information exchange, eHealthAlign is shutting its doors less than a year after startup.
The Kansas City are is also served by a few privately owned exchanges including the Lewis and Clark Information Exchange, serving providers in four states. There is also KC Carelink, which is used by “safety net” agencies.
