Maine is one of five states each receiving a $600,000 grant to support sharing of electronic health records among behavioral and medical health providers.
Awarded by the Center for Integrated Health Solutions, the grant will help 25 behavioral health organizations and 200 Maine providers to securely share medical records, including through the use of HealthInfoNet, the state’s electronic health information exchange, according to a press release from HealthInfoNet.

Congratulations to the Maine Regional Extension Center at HealthInfoNet which has met its enrollment target. It is the first regional extension centers in the country to reach its enrollment target. They are now working to assist a 1000 of Maine’s primary care providers implement an electronic health record, meet meaningful use stage one, and connect to Maine’s statewide health information exchange.

HealthInfoNet also manages the state’s regional extension center program (MEREC) as well as the health information exchange. MEREC assists health care providers across Maine select, install and effectively use electronic health records to improve patient care.

HealthInfoNet is the largest operating statewide health information exchange in the country. The state health information exchange is currently in the “demonstration” phase of development and implementation, but is expected to save the state of Maine $10.6M in 2010 and nearly $20M by the time complete implementation is realized in 2011.
