Maine Regional Extension Center – MEREC
HealthInfoNet also manages the state’s regional extension center program (MEREC) as well as the health information exchange. MEREC assists health care providers across Maine select, install and effectively use electronic health records to improve patient care.
As part of the program, the Maine Regional Extension Center connects providers with discounted electronic health record products and services, and helps them understand and meet federal meaningful use requirements.
Funded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the purpose of a Regional Extension Center is to provide education and technical assistance to help health care providers select, implement, and achieve meaningful use of certified EHR technology. One of the meaningful use requirements is the ability to exchange health information across provider organizations, something already enabled through HealthInfoNet’s health information exchange network.
