The South Metro Health Alliance (SMHA) was formed by health care providers and service agencies in Arapahoe and Douglas counties of Colorado (with the exception of Aurora) with the mission of uniting the community for better access to health care for all.
The SMHA HIE Committee met for the first time on Thursday Feb 16, 2012 to discuss the role and purpose of the HIE Committee so as this is written they are in the mid-early stages of formation. The Health Information Exchange Committee has begun the process of planning how to best assure that HIE in the communities of Arapahoe (with the exception of Aurora) and Douglas counties becomes a reality, while guaranteeing complete compliance with all HIPAA and HITECH confidentiality and patient protection laws.

Informatics for Consumer Health (ICH) is working to spread information about the resources available through Informatics for Consumer Health (ICH). The mission of ICH is to empower providers, entrepreneurs and researchers to engage with each other and move the conversation around technology’s role in managing personal health forward. The primary objective is to bridge the gap between healthcare and information technology by providing a knowledge base to foster collaborations and partnerships among public and private stakeholders to stimulate behavioral research and evidence based product development.
It seems that most of the focus on health care technology has been spend on the providers and payers, but little on the consumer end of things. ICH is working to change that.

The Missouri Direct Project is targeting the replacement of clinical data exchange scenarios today, which are primarily conducted via fax or phone call.
The pilot will provide initial focus on report distribution between acute care and community-based providers. Additional scenarios and endpoints will be added as the pilot progresses.

A broad set of stakeholders in South Texas are using the Direct Project to improve the health status of persons in South Texas with diabetes, including gestational diabetes. Participants come from the medical community (CHRISTUS Health, the Health Information Network of South Texas, the Driscoll Children’s Health Plan, Corpus Christi Medical Center, the Public Health Department, and Nueces County Medical Society), community-based social service organizations, colleges, and employers (the Coastal Bend Diabetes Community Collaborative, The Salvation Army, United Way, and others).

direct projectMedical Professional Services (MPS) is a clinically-integrated, multi-specialty IPA in Connecticut with approximately 400 physician members. Along with several partners, MPS is working to demonstrate successful exchange of laboratory results back to the ordering provider and exchange of referral information and summary care information between providers, a local hospital (Middlesex Hospital) and a multi-site Federally Qualified Health Center (Community Health Center, Inc.). Electronic exchange of data is a challenge in this setting because of the diversity of MPS physician practices, EHRs and HIT tools in place.

In this direct project, CareSpark, a non-profit regional health information exchange supported by the Tennessee State HIE, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) seek to demonstrate Direct Project-based health information exchange between a federal agency and providers in a private-sector HIE. The main focus will be on facilitating an improved process for exchanging referrals and consultation reports between VA providers and private-sector providers in east Tennessee and southwest Virginia.
