Verizon Unveils Cloud-based Health Information Exchange

Increased federal funding and the recently passed health care legislation have set the stage for wide-spread adoption of health information exchanges. To help health care organizations bridge the silos of clinical data that traditionally exist throughout the health care ecosystem, Verizon is launching Verizon Health Information Exchange, an open-standards cloud-based offering. Gerard Grundler will provide an overview of Verizon Health Information Exchange and highlight how it will help health care organizations effectively and securely share patient clinical information.

Verizon offers an Open and Standards based Health Information Exchange as-a-service. Verizon HIE is a comprehensive secure interoperability platform solution that provides Health Information Exchange as-a-service. It’s an inclusive service consisting of the key components necessary to establish a health information exchange, including a clinical portal, messaging gateway, record locator service, cross-enterprise master patient index, clinical messaging among other key components that are used to maintain the context and integrity of information being exchanged.

I find it interesting that when I was working on the Alaska eHealth Network’s Health Information Exchange, Verizon did not want to bid – saying there was too much risk.
